Solar powered mobile from Sharp

10:30 AM

solar_mobile

There is nothing more frustrating that talking on the phone only to have the line cut off simply because you ran out of juice. Sharp hopes to change that by offering an alternative method to keep your cellphone juiced up at all times, thanks to the Sharp SH6230C which will hit the Chinese market later this February. It is the first solar-powered cellphone by Sharp for the overseas market, boasting Sharp’s proprietary solar cell module alongside a generous 2.9″ LCD display and a 5-megapixel autofocus camera. The solar panel is located on the back of the handset, so you can always leave it by your window at the office to keep it primed for long conversations. No idea on its pricing though, but it is nice to see companies taking a more eco-friendly approach in their products.

HP’s venerable Pavilion series of laptops still afford shoppers some of the beefiest, budget minded laptops in the 15 to 17 inch range, and it’s no shock that now that Intel’s Arrendale processors are out, HP would take the opportunity to perform a bit of a spec bump. Here you go, then: the HP Pavilion dv6t and dv7t, now with Intel Core i3 or Core i5 mobile processors

.

Both laptops now boast a choice between an Intel Core i3-330M (2.13GHz), an Intel Core i3-350M (2.26GHz), an Intel Core i5-430M processor (2.26GHz with Turbo Boost up to 2.53 GHz) or an Intel Core i5-520M processor (2.40GHz with Turbo Boost up to 2.93 GHz processor).

Otherwise, the models distinguish themselves mainly in screen sizes. The HP Pavilion dv6t is a 15.6-inch LED affair running at 1366 x 768, while the HP Pavilion dv7t is a 17.3-inch behemoth with a resoliution of 1600 x 900 (a bit disappointing: we’d expect 1080p).

Children spend 7 hours 38 mins a day online

4:11 AM

By using more than one device at a time – such as iPods, mobile phones and computer games – some youngsters are consuming up to 10 hours of electronic content a day.

The time children spend using electrical gadgets has risen dramatically in the past five years because portable devices have revolutionised the way children access television programmes, films and music, according to a study by US welfare institute the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The researchers found that youngsters devote an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes using 'entertainment media' across a typical day, an increase of 1 hour 17 minutes since 2004. Because they spend so much of that time ‘media multitasking’, they actually manage to pack a total of 10 hours and 45 minutes worth of media content into those seven and a half hours.

They spent an average of 1 hour 35 was spent sending or receiving texts.

Researchers spoke to 2002 young people aged between eight and 18.

The report found that girls spent more time (25 mins a day) than boys (19 mins) using social networking sites such as Facebook.

Michele Elliott, a child psychologist and founder of the child welfare charity Kidscape, said parents needed to limit the amount of time young children use electronic media.

She said: “When children are using these devices they are not communicating or interacting with anyone else [in person]. They may be very good at texting but how do they do when they have to meet someone face to face?”.
